Confirmation is one of the Sacraments of Initiation into the Church. Together with Baptism and Eucharist, Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. With this sacrament, we seal or ‘confirm’ the baptized in union with Christ and empower them for active participation in the worship and apostolic life of the church.
For most teens the Confirmation process begins in ninth grade and the Sacrament of Confirmation is given in the spring of their tenth grade year. For all teens except those currently attending a Catholic High School, Confirmation is a two year preparation process.
The primary focus of the first year of preparation is looking more deeply and personally into our Catholic customs and traditions as we dive into scripture and the Catechism. The second year of the program focuses on equipping ourselves to be continual Disciples of Christ. Throughout both years, our goal is to foster opportunities for our teens to nurture and deepen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ while paying special attention to the importance of continuing the journey of personal faith formation beyond Confirmation.
All of our teens are put into small groups of 8-12 other students led by adult catechists. Throughout the year we meet in both large and small groups.
Sessions are offered on various Sundays throughout the formation year (September thru May) and are offered at either 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. or 7:15 to 8:45 p.m.
This academic year, the Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated Sunday, May 20, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Paul.
As part of the requirements for Confirmation, candidates in their first year of preparation attend an on-site retreat at St. Stephen’s.
For the final year of preparation, youth will attend an overnight retreat. Options for overnight retreats include:
