Ministries of Hospitality

by Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer, SSND

There are several ministries of hospitality that fall under the umbrella of Pastoral Care.

Funeral Luncheons: Approximately 75 volunteers form five funeral luncheon teams to provide hospitality to our guests attending a funeral. With the direction of the team leadership they set up, serve the meal, and clean up afterward.

For the past 12 1/2 years, Charlene Issa has faithfully fulfilled the role of Volunteer Funeral Luncheon Coordinator and has made sure that the selected food and necessary supplies are available: in general she has overseen the kitchen in regard to funerals. It is a much bigger responsibility than this description indicates. (Some weeks there are three funerals and that sometimes includes Saturdays.) Charlene has decided to retire from this position. We thank Charlene for her many hours and years of responsible service to our parish community through this ministry.

As of July 1, Colleen Zimmerman is the Funeral Luncheon Coordinator.

If helping to serve at funeral luncheons is a calling to which you would like to respond, please contact me at 763-712-7441.

Some of these same volunteers also assist at the reception after the annual Mass of Remembrance on November 2, All Souls Day. At this evening Mass, we pray for all souls, remembering by name the people from our parish who have died in the past year.

In addition, some assist with hospitality after the fall and spring Masses with Anointing of the Sick which are held on Saturday mornings.

We can also include here the ladies who coordinate the Second Tuesday morning hospitality after 8:00 Mass.

Hospitality is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank you to everyone who provides the service ministry of hospitality at St. Stephen’s.
