Position: Pastoral Care Ministry Director
Exempt, Full-Time 12-month Position
Resource and Direct Responsibility: Pastoral Care Ministers, Bereavement Ministers, Funeral Coordinators, Charity Outreach Volunteers, Homebound Ministers, Respect Life Groups, and Other Volunteer Groups
Purpose: The Pastoral Care Director helps to create an atmosphere of a caring presence, seeking out member needs and encouraging members to care for one another. The Pastoral Care Director is to make available services to members of our community. This person manages programs that enable members to assist in the pastoral ministry for the parish.
General Responsibilities: Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals, or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese, such that it cannot embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. It is required that this employee is an active, participating Roman Catholic.
Representative Responsibilities:
- Be present and ready to work on time for all scheduled hours.
- Create an approachable and welcoming environment where all feel comfortable bringing their emotional, social, and spiritual needs forth in a spirit of confidentiality.
- Pastoral Care Ministry
- Provide a listening ministry of care and support
- Encourage parishioners to take up leadership roles in Pastoral Care Ministry
- Manage, lead, and train the ministry program with lay persons
- Provide and coordinate commission training for lay ministers
- Arrange for ongoing communion distribution calls with trained volunteers, as needed
- Manage the pastoral needs and pastoral visits for the homebound, hospitalized, and nursing home
- Schedule routine communion visits or word prayer services at various local nursing homes
- Manage prayer request process with volunteers
- Ministry to the Bereaved
- Provide pastoral support to grieving families
- Meets with families for funeral planning and coordination of ministers
- Conduct wake services, if requested, or arrange for a trained volunteer to do so
- Coordinate the annual Mass of Remembrance, All Souls Day, and anointing of the sick Mass
- Support and assist support groups as a ministry of the parish
- Make referrals to outside groups as needed such as grief support groups
Volunteer Development:
- Identifies people who have a passion and a gift for pastoral care ministry
- Recruit, train, supervise and mentor volunteer teams to assist in ministering to those in need
- Administration
- Communicates regularly with families served, volunteers and others such as personal interaction, bulletin, email, other electronic forms, etc.
- Participates in programs and networking opportunities
- Manages pastoral ministry volunteers for the completion the safe environment training
- Attends scheduled meetings
Management:
- Manage Pastoral Ministry Commission to develop plans and goals for Pastoral Care Ministry, to monitor the progress of the plan and to identify needs that arise during the year
- Provides effective leadership for the parish and is responsible for the operational management for pastoral care ministries
- Responsible for listening and responding appropriately to the stakeholders within the pastoral care ministry area in a timely manner
Charity Assistance:
- Meet with and refer persons requesting help or seeking counseling or spiritual guidance
- Establish referral relationships with local agencies that provide support
- Manage outreach and charity needs within budget and approved guidelines

Qualifications:
- Pastoral Care Ministry experience
- Interacts and communicates well with others
- Proficient in written and computer skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Social Work Degree, preferred but not required
